As an artist I am always looking at my environment for inspiration. I look to find the extraordinary in ordinary things.
Growing up in Los Angeles I have been influenced by the urban landscape that I live in – driving through it is a big part of my life. While on interstate 101, I noticed a billboard craning over the top of the freeway.
When I first saw it, I thought: “This is the most amazing piece of art!”
After several years of this Billboard grabbing my attention, I decided that I needed to document it somehow. My original intention was to create a still image and a large print to include in my latest photographic series, Inadvertent Neoglyph.
In the process of exploring ways of photographing the billboard, it became apparent to me I needed to use a drone. The drone offered a more extensive opportunity to document the billboard which led me toward filming the entire process.
I consider the final video to be an experimental documentation on how the still image was achieved.
